What is acupuncture and how does it help? Acupuncture is based on the premise that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of the body’s life energy, or “qi,” (pronounced ‘chee’) can cause health issues. Acupuncturists insert hair-thin needles to specific acupuncture points throughout the body to restore the flow of qi, balance the body’s energy, stimulate healing, and promote relaxation.
The origins of acupuncture can be traced back over 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest health care systems in the world. Today, acupuncture supports the treatment of a wide number of conditions.
Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile, single use, disposable needles into specific sites (acupuncture points) along the body’s energy pathways (meridians) to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of energy, or Qi, through the body.
The practitioner may also stimulate the acupuncture points using other methods, including acupressure, moxibustion, cupping, laser therapy, electro-stimulation and massage, in order to rebalance the flow of qi.
An appointment involves a period of discussion with your practitioner about your presenting symptoms, health, lifestyle, diet and your general well-being. We then look at the tongue and take your pulse, we may also palpate areas of the body.
Following this a Chinese medicine diagnosis is made and a treatment plan outlined which may include a combination of the following therapies.
Herbal formulas are an additional cost to treatment.
Treatment times and frequency can vary based on the condition being treated

Is there any evidence that acupuncture works?
The Acupuncture Evidence Project was published in 2017. It is a review of the evidence supporting the efficacy of acupuncture currently available.
Of the 122 conditions reviewed, evidence of effect was found at various levels for 117 conditions.
The findings of the review include:
Conditions with strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture included allergic rhinitis (perennial & seasonal), knee osteoarthritis, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (with anti-emetics), migraine prophylaxis, chronic low back pain, postoperative nausea & vomiting, headache (tension-type and chronic) and postoperative pain.
Conditions with moderate evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture included acute low back pain, acute stroke, neck pain, obesity, anxiety, perimenopausal and postmenopausal insomnia, asthma in adults, post-traumatic stress disorder, constipation, hypertension (with medication), irritable bowel syndrome and menopausal hot flushes.

Reiki is an energy healing treatment working holistically with the mind, body and spirit to relieve stress and pain, induce relaxation, accelerate natural healing and release emotional blockages.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki promotes healing by activating the relaxation response and helping the body to balance itself from a very deep level. It gently balances a person’s life energy, allowing the body’s innate intelligence to bring well-being and good health to the individual.
Reiki works well as a support to other medical and traditional therapies without impacting them. Reiki is not affiliated with any spiritual or religious practice.
Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body. By stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands, you are increasing circulation and promoting specific bodily and muscular functions.
Reflexology aids in harmonizing and balancing the body’s energy system through the use of thumb-walking, finger-walking, rotation, and pressure-pointing of reflex areas.
Reflexology has been shown to:
Reduce the effect of stress
Balance the nervous system
Improve energy levels
Increase the body’s immune response
Improve sleep quality
Boost lymphatic function
Detoxify the body
Enhance the body’s natural healing process
Affect all the body systems, encouraging the systems to work effectively as one
Reflexology offers a deeply relaxing and stress-reducing experience which is an excellent form of preventative self-care. Reflexology is beneficial to all individuals and in any stage of life: pregnancy, infants, children, adults, senior adults, and end-of-life care.
